Is Your Rhodiola Rosea Extract Standardized or Just Concentrated?
Two bags of rhodiola sit on a buyer’s desk. One label says 5:1. The other lists marker percentages. Both arrive in the sales email as standardized rhodiola rosea extract, and the price gap between them gets explained away as brand.
It is not a brand thing. They are two different kinds of product.

What Does a 5:1 Ratio Actually Tell You?
Only how much root went into the extractor. Five kilos of dried root for one kilo of powder, that is all. It says nothing about how much of the useful markers ended up in the bag. A rhodiola extract powder sold on ratio alone can carry plenty of root solids and very little of what you wanted.
Standardized means someone measured. An HPLC report shows the marker percentages in your lot, and the supplier adjusts the extract to hit a target. Ratio is a process fact. Standardization is a result.
Buyers who mix the two up usually find out when the finished capsule fails its own label test.

Why Do Rosavins and Salidroside Both Matter?
Because they answer different questions. Salidroside shows up in several rhodiola species, so a salidroside only spec cannot prove you got the right plant. Rosavins are tied to Rhodiola rosea, which makes them the better identity check. The classic grade of 3% rosavins and 1% salidroside mirrors the ratio found in the real root, and that is why it became the trade standard.
Salidroside only grades exist and have their place, mostly in water soluble or beverage uses. Just do not accept one as a substitute without asking which species it came from and how it was made. Cheap material is cheap for a reason.
What Should the Spec Sheet Show?
Plant part and species, in writing. Rhodiola rosea root extract should say root, not aerial parts, and name Rhodiola rosea on the document.
Then the numbers that decide whether production runs smoothly: marker percentages by HPLC, extraction solvent and residual solvent result, mesh size (80 mesh is common), moisture, and heavy metals per lot. The powder is brown, a little bitter and picks up moisture quickly. That matters in capsules, tablets and stick packs, and even more in drink mixes where flavor masking is part of the job. Ask for foil lined packaging, usually drums of 25 kg, and keep the storage room dry.
Order a sample and fill a few trial capsules before you commit. Flow and caking show up in an afternoon.

FAQ
1、Is a 5:1 extract the same as a standardized extract?
No. A ratio shows root used, while standardization confirms marker percentages measured by HPLC in the finished powder.
2、Which marker confirms the plant is Rhodiola rosea?
Rosavins. Salidroside appears in other rhodiola species, so it cannot confirm identity alone.
3、What mesh size is typical for rhodiola powder?
Most commercial grades pass 80 mesh, which suits capsule filling and blending with other dry ingredients.
